Whale Meat

Whale meat produced in Japan’s ever increasing ‘scientific whaling’ is being turned into dog food.

Japan’s stockpile of whale meat has doubled in the past decade as a result of more and more animals being killed each year, and selling the meat as dog food is the latest attempt by Japan to stimulate the market and shift the hundreds of tonnes of whale meat piling up in Japanese warehouses.

Japan has already attempted to sell the meat by subsidising sales of whale burgers, whale ice-cream and whale meat on school lunch menus. However, the price of whale produce has continued to fall and now whale meat is being turned into dog food.

Despite having stockpiles of 4,800 tonnes of whale meat last year, this year Japan has doubled its hunt of minke whales in Antarctica, and plans to add humpback whales and fin whales – the second largest animal on the planet – to its list of target species. This could see another 1,700 tonnes of whale meat added to the piles sitting in warehouses waiting to be made into pet food.
