Brussels Sprouts

Brussel sprouts, Brassica oleracea var gemmifera, are known to be native to cool regions in northern Europe. They were a popular vegetable crop in Belgium during the sixteenth century from which they were spread to the surrounding countries throughout temperate Europe.

Brussel sprouts are a cool season biennial. Axillary buds are borne in the leaf axils during the first year of growth. A seed head is produced in the second year after vernalization has occured.

Brussels sprouts are served cooked. Serve as an accompanying vegetable to roast turkey or chicken or to game dishes. Sprouts can be boiled or steamed. To boil, bring a pan of water to the boil, add the sprouts and cook for 10-15 minutes or until tender. To steam, place in a steamer and cook for 15-20 minutes or until tender. Drain well before serving.

Your dog will like Sprouts, but like most vegetables the fibre content is broken down by cooking. Boil Sprouts until soft and tender, but only give a 3-4 with other vegetables and meat.
